Where to Visit in Kauai: Wailua Falls

On the first day of our trip to Kauai, my Laolao and I visited Wailua Falls, a double tiered waterfall on the East side of Kauai. It was an easy drive from where we were staying in Kapa’a, about half an hour. To get to the falls, follow highway 56, then turn onto Maalo Road. It passes through beautiful fields and farmland, up through windy hillside roads. You can drive right up to and park at the top of the falls. There is a overlook area that is perfect for taking photos and watching the water cascade beautifully from the cliff.

The canyon is absolutely stunning. It is lush and forested. We saw birds swooping through the air in the canyon. It was so pretty. We also saw a gorgeous rainbow in the mist of the waterfall, at the bottom where the falls entered the pond. It was unlike any rainbow I had seen before.

There is a pond at the bottom of the falls but the hillside is very steep. The county of Kauai advises against hiking down to the bottom of the falls. Only expert hikers with proper gear and preparation should hike to the bottom.
